Zero Balancing

Zero Balancing is a dynamic therapy, which integrates Eastern concepts of energy healing and western scientific knowledge of the body.

The unique touch of Zero Balancing brings a clearer flow of energy and promotes structural alignment throughout the body.

Subtle balancing of the joints nourishes and restores the body at a deep level promoting feelings of well being, relaxation and freedom from within.

What are the benefits?

On one level, a Zero Balancing session may improve body functioning and relieve physical pains and held tensions.

On a broader level, Zero Balancing is particularly valuable in dealing with stress (including the normal day to day pressures of modern life) and held emotions.

Zero Balancing promotes the quietening and centering of the mind/body, bringing harmony and peace. Sessions also aim to enhance general health and help people realize their full potential.

How it differs from other approaches?

Zero Balancing integrates both Eastern and Western knowledge into an original, practical and coherent body skill.

A Zero Balancing session usually lasts about an hour. This allows for some talking before and afterwards. Hands on work may last between 35 and 55 minutes depending on the energetic needs of each client, who lies on their back, fully clothed on a massage table.

The practitioner focuses on evaluating and balancing key joints in the body using specific finger pressure and held stretches called fulcrums. The client’s body is taken into places of refreshing relaxation thereby inducing a profound experience of wellbeing and integration. The touch used in Zero balancing has a characteristic clarity, which is pleasurable to receive.

How did Zero Balancing originate?

The name “Zero Balancing” came from a client’s description of her experience of a session: “I feel I’ve been brought back to balance, like a return to zero”.

Dr Fritz Fredrick Smith, the American originator of this bodywork approach, received his Bachelor of Science in 1951, Doctor of Osteopathy and General Medicine from 1957 to 1972.

During the 1960’s and 70’s, seeking a deeper understanding of illness and health, he became a student of yoga and meditation as well as a certified rolfer and a licensed acupuncturist. His scientific viewpoint was increasingly challenged by eastern influences and particularly by his clinical experience of acupuncture.

In 1975, while studying with Professor J.R. Worsley at the College of Traditional Acupuncture in England, he evolved Zero Balancing as a project of excellence for his Bachelor of Acupuncture degree. He has since taught Zero Balancing to thousands of practitioners.

In 1986, he published his book, Inner Bridges, which describes the path of discovery that led to Zero Balancing.

In 1991 Dr Smith retired from active practice and now devotes himself to teaching and exploring the unfolding possibilities of Zero Balancing.

How the Client sees it.

“Z.B. has become part of my holistic state of wellbeing. Being a dancer, my body is pushed beyond its own limitations on a daily basis. Z.B. helps to restore and nourish my inner core, thus enabling me to maintain peak performance. During a session a sense of peace and harmony unfold over me and I drift into a state of bliss. When I leave the session, I am walking on air, so light, free, centred and at one with myself.” Yana Lewis, A.I.S.T.D.Dip Ballet Dancer/Teacher 2001.

“What lasted hours – and, less dramatically days – was a feeling of incredible well-being. I felt centred, grounded and profoundly relaxed.” Nikki Casey – Company Director 2002.

“Zero Balancing left me feeling stress free, slowing down both my body and mind. Immediately following and for days after, I felt peaceful, light and focused. Romi Kaufman, BA(Hons) Assoc MAPS.
